Hi everyone!! My name is Allison, and I’m so excited to be a house mom this semester! I went abroad with Linking Lives as a student in Fall 2023, and I was a house mom in Rwanda in Fall 2025. It’s impossible to choose a favorite memory from my time abroad, but what stands out is the people! I’ve made lifelong friends through this program, and I’m so thankful I decided to do it two years ago.

A little more bit about me - I graduated from VT in May with a Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise degree, and I’m heading to OT school at WashU St. Louis in August! I love running, reading, cooking & eating, hiking, and traveling (of course).

I can’t wait to meet all of you guys! I know going abroad can feel intimidating, but it’s beyond worth it for all of the incredible places you see and people you meet. Lugano & Rwanda are two of the most beautiful places in the entire world. Hope you’re getting excited, see you soon!!

Last but certainly not least, we are spotlighting our group of students who spent November in Muhazi, Rwanda!!!🇷🇼✈️

The Linking Lives students had the amazing opportunity to stay at the Muhazi Lodge, overlooking Lake Muhazi and the rolling farmland hills of the village. Rainbow sightings and sunsets only made their home more beautiful! Students got to help with planting saplings on the property, building a new garden, and visiting the animals. Our group also got to help prepare the new nursery school for opening that was built on the property! They painted murals and taught local children once school was in session.🌅🌱🐣

Our group also had the chance to meet with members of the Muhazi community whose fundraising efforts were directly affecting - including the family of the house they helped fund and construct, as well as a meet some of the 600 families that were given medical insurance for a year because of their fundraising efforts. Connecting with the Muhazi village was extremely special for both the community and the Linking Lives students.🏠🤍

Outside of teaching in the primary and nursery schools, the students went on a safari to Akagera National Park, worked with Muhazi’s women cooperative teaching english, held a badminton tournament on the grounds, and went for a boat ride on the lake! Each day ended with card games and journaling to unwind. The students even got to celebrate the graduation of their translator, Kamali, who graduated second in his class (woohoo!!!!!). ⭐️🛶🏸

Throughout it all, the Linking Lives students learned so much from the Muhazi community. Whether they were visiting wildlife sanctuaries or homes of community members to talk and hear their stories, our students walked away with a breadth of knowledge about Rwandan culture and way of life.☀️🗺️

Our next group spotlight from Fall 2025’s trip to Rwanda highlights our students who went to Ruli!🇷🇼

From the moment our group of Linking Lives students arrived in Ruli, they were met with kindness and hospitality by the community and the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation, who kindly hosted the group in their guesthouse during their stay. The students spent a lot of time connecting with local primary school students, teaching them various school subjects in the classrooms, playing soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and learning more about their day-to-day lives. ⚽️🤸‍♂️✏️

Cultural exchange was at the heart of their experience in Ruli. Our students were able to frequently meet with the secondary school’s English Club, where they read books, watched movies, learned how to debate, played games, and learned Rwandan and American dances together! The Linking Lives students also got to meet with local nursing students, local government representatives, genocide survivors, and tailoring students to connect with them and learn more about Rwandan history, culture, and life.💛🩵

The month in Rwanda would not be complete without a safari at Akagera National Park. Our students got extremely lucky, spotting lions (very rare to see!!!!), elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and more! On their way back to Ruli, the students spent the day in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali.🦁🦒🦏

Throughout the experience, the Linking Lives students learned so much about themselves and beautiful Rwanda. Our next group spotlight from Fall 2025’s trip to Rwanda highlights our students who went to Ruli!🇷🇼

From the moment our group of Linking Lives students arrived in Ruli, they were met with kindness and hospitality by the community and the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation, who kindly hosted the group in their guesthouse during their stay. The students spent a lot of time connecting with local primary school students, teaching them various school subjects in the classrooms, playing soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and learning more about their day-to-day lives. ⚽️🤸‍♂️✏️

Cultural exchange was at the heart of their experience in Ruli. Our students were able to frequently meet with the secondary school’s English Club, where they read books, watched movies, learned how to debate, played games, and learned Rwandan and American dances together! The Linking Lives students also got to meet with local nursing students, local government representatives, genocide survivors, and tailoring students to connect with them and learn more about Rwandan history, culture, and life.💛🩵

The month in Rwanda would not be complete without a safari at Akagera National Park. Our students got extremely lucky, spotting lions (very rare to see!!!!), elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and more! On their way back to Ruli, the students spent the day in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali.🦁🦒🦏

Throughout the experience, the Linking Lives students learned so much about themselves and beautiful Rwanda. Our Fall 2025 students recently returned from their month-long visit to Rwanda, and we are so excited to share what they got up to! Here is a look into how our group in Nyamyumba spent their time.🌟🌏🤸‍♀️

At the beginning of November, our students were warmly welcomed into the Nyamyumba community and Casa Mabawa! Mabawa is an Italian-based NGO that has been working to strengthen education, health, homes, water, agriculture, and more in the Nyamyumba Village since 2004. This village in Rwanda is extremely special to the Linking Lives Study Abroad program, as our students have been returning here to visit year after year to engage in a one-of-a-kind cultural exchange experience.🇷🇼🤍

During their time in Nyamyumba, our students had the special opportunity of becoming a part of the community where they taught students and painted murals at the local primary and secondary schools, built gardens, met with community members and leaders, and taught English to local tailors to help them start their own businesses.🎨🌿☀️

Linking Lives students in Nyamyumba also got to learn more about Rwandan culture through their visits to the Mata Tea Factory, learning to bake traditional pastries, and Kinyarwandan lessons. One of the many highlights of the month was when the group got to go on a safari where they saw elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and so much more!🐘⭐️🦒

Through it all, our students created lifelong friendships. Every memory they made is so special and unforgettable - whether they were dancing in the rain, celebrating birthdays, or playing card games to end the night!🫂🗺️🕺🏼

The Lugano program was super special to me - so much so that I’m actually heading back to Lugano this spring!

I studied abroad in Lugano during the spring semester in 2014 during my junior year at Virginia Tech. The friends I made and experiences we had together are ones that are still super important to me today! I still regularly get together with my classmates from abroad, and I even met my now wife on the trip :).

From exploring the town of Lugano in our free time, to whirlwind trips all over Europe (I think I visited 14 countries), the program taught us all about creative problem solving, and especially about being open-minded to other cultures and present in every moment.

It’s hard to pick a favorite memory but one of the most impactful moments was definitely visiting the Dachau concentration camp outside of Munich. It’s truly one of those experiences that’s hard to comprehend until you’re there but something that will stay with me forever.

Since my study abroad trip, I’ve continued to explore around the world with my wife Ashley, and have re-visited Lugano several times (it somehow gets more beautiful with every visit). My experience was a huge contributing factor to my career as well, having worked for a global marketing agency, a Paris-based startup, and my latest role at Google in NYC. Being open-minded to other cultures and having a student mentality are two of the biggest lessons that I took away from the program that have stuck with me for life.

I’ll be returning to Lugano for the Spring 2026 semester as a “house parent” and instructor for the Marketing Research course, and am looking forward to continuing to learn, travel and adventure with Linking Lives!
